A Milwaukee Mom’s Guide to the Month of September

The month of September means back-to-school, kick off to fall, and all things pumpkin are released in local retailers everywhere. I’m beyond pumped…fall is my favorite time of year in Milwaukee!

Harvest Fair at Wisconsin State Fair Park :: September 22 – 24

Wisconsin State Fair Harvest FairA Bounty of Fun for Everyone! Save the Date for Harvest Fair presented by Meijer, September 22-24, 2016. FREE Admission.

The dates and times for Harvest Fair are:
-Friday, Sept. 22: 5pm – 11pm
-Saturday, Sept. 23: 9am – 11pm
-Sunday, Sept. 24: 9am – 5pm

Fun activities for kids of all ages include pumpkin bowling, scarecrow making, decorate your own cookie, Great Lakes Timber Show, amusement rides and more! Come hungry and ready to shop! Many of your favorite State Fair vendors are open during Harvest Fair, including The Micro, featuring over 50 craft beers. The Farmer’s Market features everything from Fall decorations to flowers, food and more! Pick up pumpkins at the Pumpkin Patch, and don’t forget your Elegant Farmer pies! 

September 01 – 03 Wisconsin Futurity Horse Festival :: Come and watch! American Saddlebred Horse Competition. Professional, amateur, academy riders. Performance and equitation classes.

September 02 The Great Inflatable Race :: The Great Inflatable Race is the first and original all inflatable obstacle fun run that uses giant inflatables spread throughout the running course.  You’ll start the race climbing one of our inflatables and then race your friends and family to the next inflatable obstacle.

September 02 – 03 Third Ward Art Festival :: In the heart of Milwaukee’s arts and fashion district, the 6th annual Third Ward Art Festival is showcasing the work of more than 140 juried artists, 36 of whom are from Wisconsin. The festival will include a variety of mediums including ceramics, fiber, glass jewelry, sculpture, mixed media, paintings, drawings, photography, printmaking, wood, furniture and more.

September 02 – 04 Hop Harvest Weekend at Old World Wisconsin :: Join with other guests to take part in a traditional community hop harvest, just like families have done for generations.

September 03 Maxwell Street Days :: Cedarburg’s popular flea market, that takes place in Firemen’s Park four times each year (May 28, July 16, Sep. 3 and Oct. 1) rain or shine. Around 650 vendors represented with a varied selection of antiques, collectibles, crafts, fine arts, pottery fresh produce, seasonal items, sports memorabilia, architectural/industrial items, flea market items and more, including a Kids’ area.

September 03 Big Gig BBQ :: Back for 2017. FREE ADMISSION and FREE PARKING. This Labor Day weekend, you’ll find the best BBQ in town on the south end of Henry Maier Festival Park.

September 08 Pewaukee Food Truck and Car Show Rally :: Family friendly event featuring classic cars, music, drinks and food trucks!

September 08 – 10 Indian Summer Festival :: Celebrating 31 years as one of Milwaukee’s famous ethnic festivals. Indian Summer Festival is a family oriented, cultural festival and strives to educate, preserve and promote the diversity, history and tradition of Tribal cultures.

September 09 Walk to End Alzheimer’s (Waukesha) :: Join us in Waukesha County at Frame Park, Waukesha, on September 9 for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, the nation’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research.

September 09 Silver City InterNational Festival :: Travel the world along National Avenue between South 33rd and 35th streets and sample ethnic cuisine from countries spanning the globe while also enjoying live art performances, free live music, free activities for kids and displays from local bus. 

September 09 Annual Grace Community Rummage :: The downtown community comes together for Grace’s annual, one-stop rummage sale event! In years past, shoppers and treasure hunters have found gently used kitchen utensils and glassware, home decor and furnishings, furniture and bedding, clothing for all ages, books, jewelry, toys, tools, and more! Need an energy boost while shopping? Grace Place Coffee will also be open throughout the event!

September 09 Xtreme Raptor Day at Schlitz Audubon :: Join us for the festival that celebrates all things raptor! Our resident birds await you on Center trails, birds fly right overhead at Free Flight Demonstrations, and much more!

September 09 Family Story Time with Author Dr. Chaucey Chandler :: Dr. Chaucey Chandler will present a family story time featuring her new book, Flawless Extra-Ordinary Super Heroes, a fictional story about the experiences of exceptional children. The story is geared towards ages 5-9 but all ages are welcome. Fun interactive activities will be available after the story. Books will be available for purchase on site. The author will be available to sign copies of her book. Registration is not required.

September 09 – 10 Family Farm Weekend at the Zoo :: Most of the day’s farm-related activities will be held at the Northwestern Mutual Family Farm—the only working dairy farm in the city of Milwaukee! The weekend offers fun for all ages and will feature food demonstrations, milking parlor demonstrations, a children’s pedal tractor-pull exhibition, and a local farmers market featuring farm-fresh treats like maple sugar, gourmet hot sauces, honey and lotions. 

September 09 – 10 International Kite Festival :: This fun filled family event is free to all, with plenty of free parking. See the link for all the details, this festival is sure to delight! 

September 09 – October 22 Autumn Harvest Fest at Elegant Farmer 

September 10 Grandparents Day at Discovery World :: Make this Grandparent’s Day special by bringing Grandma and Grandpa to Discovery World for FREE! Spend a fun-filled day with your Grandparents creating unique projects with the Kohl’s Design It! Lab, petting stingrays in the Reiman Aquarium, exploring our interactive exhibits, and much more!

September 16 Briggs and Al’s Walk & Run :: Briggs & Al’s Run & Walk is a Milwaukee classic, a signature event for Children’s and a critical fundraiser. Around 16,000 people take part every year, each for their own reason. Many walk or run in support of a child they love, some enjoy running an official 8k, our employees and corporate partners enjoy the chance to connect with our mission, and many just want to celebrate and support the children we serve. 

September 16 NAMI Walks (Waukesha) :: Join the National Alliance on Mental Illness of Waukesha County for our largest fundraising and awareness building event, NAMIWalks Waukesha. This event brings together hundreds of individuals to raise awareness about mental health.

September 16 Turkish Food and Craft Festival :: Join us a day of fun activities, crafts and delicious homemade Turkish food at TASWI. Check out the link for details.

September 16 – 17 Holy Hill Art and Farm Market :: The secluded rustic property has been transformed into a Unique Event Destination featuring Art & Farm Market Events, Dinners on the Farm, Music Night on the Farm and Art & Wine Classes.

September 17 Walk to End Alzheimer’s (Milwaukee) ::  Join us in Milwaukee County at Henry Maier Festival Park, Milwaukee, on September 17 for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, the nation’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. 

September 17 Food Truck Sunday :: Up to 15 food trucks will be serving food in downtown South Milwaukee from noon to 4 p.m. while a classic rock cover band plays favorites at the downtown market square on 11th Avenue.

September 17 Ninja Warrior Competition :: Legendary Fitness is holding its first Ninja Warrior competition! Think you can get the farthest the fastest on our state-of-the-art Ninja course? Check out the link for more details! 

September 21 Girls’ Night Out with MKEMB :: Are you ready for the best Girls’ Night Out ever?! Join New Balance Milwaukee & The Barre Code Milwaukee for a girls’ night you don’t want to miss! We’ll kick the night off with a fun bootcamp-style workout by The Barre Code and follow it up with food & fun. We’ll complete the night with a photo booth, swag bags, and raffle prizes!

September 22 – 24 Harvest Fair at WI State Fair Park :: Get the family together for a day at Harvest Fair! Enjoy fall-focused events, activities, live entertainment, competitions, scarecrow making and the much anticipated Pumpkin Bowling!

September 23 Fromm PetFest :: Fromm Petfest is a FREE family and pet-friendly event that takes place on the Summerfest grounds in Milwaukee. Petfest will host a variety of pet-focused attractions and activities, including dock diving, agility and lure courses, Kitty City, main stage presentations featuring disc dogs and pet costume contests, a pet-themed marketplace, family-focused activities, music, food and more. And yes, parking is FREE too!

September 23 – 24 Doors Open Milwaukee :: Doors Open, an event organized by Historic Milwaukee, offers behind the scenes tours of more than 150 buildings throughout Milwaukee’s downtown and neighborhoods and in-depth tours led by community leaders. Doors Open sites include commercial properties, sacred spaces, apartment buildings, breweries, art galleries, community gardens and more stretching from downtown to the surrounding suburbs, and the neighborhoods between. A few new behind the scenes tours this year will include the Northwestern Mutual’s new tower downtown, Tandem in Lindsay Heights, and the Mitchell Park Greenhouses in Clark Square.

September 23 – 24 Maker Faire Milwaukee :: Maker Faire is the Greatest Show (and Tell) on Earth — a free, family-friendly festival of invention, creativity and resourcefulness, and a celebration of the Maker Movement.

September 24 Cheery Cherry Fall Fair :: The 49th annual Cheery Cherry Fall Fair is a fun filled fall day that includes juried arts and crafts vendors, von Stiehl wine, Door County cherry products, food and beverage, raffle and silent auction and more!

September 30 Sturgeon Fest :: Head to Lakeshore State Park in downtown Milwaukee for the 12th Annual Sturgeon Fest on September 30, 2017 to enjoy a day of free, family fun (and make a huge difference while doing it!). PLUS, release a young sturgeon into Lake Michigan!

September 30 Sci-Fi Family Day at Discovery World :: Sci-Fi Family Day is back at Discovery World! See magnificent costumes, props, and displays while you interact with your favorite characters from the sci-fi world! Add to the fun of the day by dressing up as your favorite character!
