Well Fitting Bra

A well-fitting bra? Is that actually a THING? How? I’m WHAT size? There are RULES to wearing a bra?

Women vs. their bras; a struggle since the invention of the bra made from two handkerchiefs and ribbon! The world of bras has come a long way since then, but women still experience discomfort and difficulty with their foundations. Women who are new to the world of professional bra fitting routinely have “Bra-ha!” moments as we help to unravel the myths and mysteries surrounding these complex garments.

Never fear, ladies. The bra fit experts from Allure Intimate Apparel are here!

Joining us today is Sarah from Allure Intimate Apparel with some of the most common misconceptions she hears as a trained fit expert as well as her suggestions for how to achieve your best fit so you can stop fighting with your bra once and for all.

One of the biggest misconceptions: DD is the largest available cup size.

In fact, bras are available in nearly 200 sizes ranging in bands from 28-54 with cups ranging from AA to O. The struggle is REAL for women needing bras outside the limited selection available at popular, big box lingerie and department stores. After years of fitting women with high-quality bras in an extensive size range, I’m here to confirm; women come in 200 sizes and more!

Another fun fact from the bra-fitting world:  The band around your ribcage provides the MAJORITY of the support/lift, 80%, in fact.

Contrary to common belief, the straps on a woman’s shoulders should be only comfortably snug to avoid pain and discomfort.  When the band is snug and properly fit, it will do most of the hard work of lifting up the breasts, relieving any strain on the back. AND….that band should be fitting on the loosest hook right away when you buy it so that as the elastic ages and stretches a bit, you can move it in to the tighter ones to extend your fit. Game-changer, right?!

Front and CENTER: After putting on a bra, the tissue must be shifted and “centered” in the cup.

Each bra is molded so the center of the breast sits in the very middle of the cup space. This will offer a perfect fit and additionally, will help the bra wear more evenly. This also allows the breast tissue to clear the underwire to avoid pinching! Not sure how to achieve this maneuver for the best fit? Stop into an Allure location and they will be happy to show you!

NEVER wear the SAME bra two days in a row.

Most women are astounded at this bra wear rule and tell us horrific tales of wearing the same bra for an entire week! While on the body, the fine elastic threads in the bra experience tension, stress and should be “rested” for one day after a day on the body. We love to remind our customers, the bra has worked hard for you all day, give it a day off!

Only wash your bras with a lot of TLC.

Never use detergents with Sodium/Potassium Hydroxide to launder bras, panties, swimwear or workout wear. While this is an effective agent used in many popular detergents, it’s far too harsh for the fine synthetic fibers in bras. We recommend the use of a plant-based brand or anything eco-friendly. Hand washing is definitely best but the hand wash or delicates cycle may be used on a washing machine. Air dry delicates and hang bras in the middle between the two cups; avoid hanging by one strap as this will stretch out a bra. NEVER place a bra in the dryer; heat is a bra’s worst enemy!

Get professionally fitted by someone with specific training

The overall body benefit to wearing a perfectly fitting bra can alleviate shoulder and neck strain and has an impressive impact on the way clothes fit, but selecting the right size and style takes much more training than most women assume. Think a bra can’t make that much of a difference? Think again!

The woman pictured here was wearing a bra MUCH too large around her ribcage and MANY cup sizes too small; she felt terrific in her new bra and couldn’t believe how much better she looked in her clothing! Finding a comfortable, well-fitting bra can feel overwhelming, but with a bit of help from a trained professional, can be easily accomplished in as little as 30 minutes!

You are not supposed to wear the same bra two days in a row?! I may switch off between two every other week…

Whoops … I always hang by the strap. No more!

I know I don’t wash my bras often enough, but I didn’t know you aren’t supposed to wear the same one two days in a row! (As I sit here for the 4th day in my same nursing bra…)

I didn’t realize that hour bra should fit on the first hook so you can tighten when stretches. I’ve always worn mine on the middle hook.

Before going to Allure earlier this year I never knew that you should “scoop and swoop” to position the “girls” in your bra.
