I’m a Snooze Junkie.
After years and years of struggling to get any decent sleep at all (Thanks, kids. Love you.), the mornings when the alarm clock goes off are a battle for me every single time. I have been known to set five or six alarms in 10 minute increments just to try to actually get myself up. My body is so attached to its sleep that I will reach over and either shut off the alarm or hit the snooze feature while still in so much of a sleep state that I don’t even realize I’m doing it. So by the time I actually get up, I feel groggy and sluggish and my husband is crabby too because he’s been hearing my alarm go off for the last 45 minutes.
That’s why I was so excited to hear about the new “smart alarm” from Verlo! After hearing more about it, I dared to dream that Verlo’s SmartWake just might be the solution to my snooze addiction.
We all know that sleep is important. Parents, raise your hand if getting a good night’s sleep is a challenge for you. I think we can all agree that kids, especially babies and young kiddos, make sleeping tough. And then they get older and suddenly there are activities, appointments and all kinds of things going on that add stress to our already busy lives. It’s safe to say that parents at any stage are the ones who need healthy rest the most!
Verlo SmartWake goes far beyond the sleep tracking you’ll find on your fitness tracker or other health wristbands. This smart alarm clock monitors the user’s heart rate, breathing and movement to identify sleep phases and uses industry-leading technology and unrivaled accuracy to calculate the best time possible to wake up the user, resulting in a better approach to sleeping and waking!
Traditional alarm clocks aren’t optimizing my sleep because that the alarm goes off at the time I set it to, regardless of the sleep cycle I’m in. And when it goes off while I’m still in a deep or REM sleep, it makes sense that I would be slapping that snooze without even realizing it. Waking up during the right sleep phase can mean feeling rested and refreshed or waking up feeling groggy and crabby.
The SmartWake alarm wakes users during a light sleep phase, the optimal time for waking, within a selected time range. You can set this range at anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes to allow SmartWake to wake you up at the best time based on your individualized sleep patterns.
How does it work?
SmartWake is cutting-edge technology and it is presented as such. The SmartWake sensor is a disc-like device that you place underneath you mattress, near where your outer shoulder will be when you lay down. You download the SmartWake app and then sync the device to your smartphone using Bluetooth.
In addition to the alarm function, SmartWake tracks your sleep patterns, including your breathing, heart rate and movements so you get a detailed sleep report to help you understand your sleep better. I found it very interesting how long it actually takes me to fall asleep. Plus, you can enter things like exercise and alcoholic beverages in a diary to see how that affects your sleep. Are you the competitive type? SmartWake will use all these factors to calculate a personalized sleep score that you can make adjustments over time to try to improve your overall sleep quality.
So, even if you already have built-in alarm clocks who wake up needing to be fed or changed or have monsters scared away in the wee hours of the morning, SmartWake offers valuable data regarding your sleep so you can make those winks that you get in the most restful possible and can help you adopt sleep habits to improve you rest over time.
What about Snooze?
My favorite feature of SmartWake is the Perpetual Alarm feature. When you enable this feature, it helps kicks Snooze Junkies like me out of bed. Sometimes you wake up and even though you are feeling pretty rested, the bed is just really comfy and it’s cold out there. SmartWake has this covered. With Perpetual Alarm, the alarm keeps going off until you actually get out of bed. And then if you get back into bed after a visit to the bathroom, it goes off again. I say this because I totally tried it in an attempt to outsmart SmartWake.
The SmartWake is available for purchase at any Verlo Mattress Store – including a couple locations right here in the Milwaukee area. Check out their newest location at the Mayfair Collection in Wauwatoa!
