Exploring Milwaukee’s Fabulous Farmers’ Markets

Milwaukee Area Farmers Markets

June. Its the start of outdoor farmer’s market season here in the Midwest. And in the metro Milwaukee area, we are blessed with an abundance of beautiful farmers’ markets literally every day of the week.  Shopping at a farmer’s market is a fun experience for the whole family — it is enjoyable to simply browse the stalls, but its even better when you buy. Because when you make a purchase at a farmers market, you’re buying a fresher, more local product and you’re supporting a local producer. All this while promoting a healthy lifestyle.  It can also be a fabulous learning experience for kids of all ages –  a time to teach them where their food comes from and what’s in the foods they eat. They can learn about the differences in farming (“what’s organic mean, mom?”). And it also helps them understand the seasons of food (especially handy when they are hankering for watermelon in January). Its a win-win situation.

Farmers markets are also a wonderful community experience, where you can meet your neighbors, friends, and farmers, and where more of your dollar will stay in the community.  And while there are no shortage of great markets here in the Milwaukee area, some folks like to make a day trip out of it and explore other markets. So we have a few of those listed as well.  For a full listing, please refer to the Farm Fresh Atlas of SE Wisconsin

To make the most of your farmers’ market trip, I suggest the following 5 tips:

  1. Shop around. Walk the market and check out all the produce, comparing the prices and quality before making a purchase.
  2. Ask questions. Don’t be afraid to ask for a sample of something if its a vegetable you’ve never seen. Or ask the farmer how its used/what to use it in. Typically, if they grow it, they eat it.
  3. Carry cash. Not all vendors accept credit cards.
  4. Bring your own bags.
  5. Not all markets are pet friendly, so make sure to check before you bring Fido along.
