Wisconsin State Fair Food

Wisconsin State FairThere’s so much to love about the Wisconsin State Fair, the best 11 days of every summer in the entire state! It’s no secret that we love the fair around here. Check our our Family Guide to the Wisconsin Sate Fair for the inside scoop on all the activities, hot-spots and timeless classics. But if we’re being honest, I think we can all agree on who the real star of the show is.

The Food

Bring the family and come hungry and be ready to work your way through more than 200 stops serving up allthethings on sticks, giant pickles, roasted corn on-the-cob, cheese curds and so much more. In fact, the Wisconsin State Fair even holds a competition each year to award the highly-coveted Sporkie award to the best, most unique food at the fair.

To cover all the amazing options would take a post of epic-proportions, so we are going to cover the highlights of the foods you can’t miss, the new creations, and even some more health-conscious options that are still kid-friendly.

The Can’t Miss Delights

In addition to the staples of the roasted corn on-the-cob and cheese curds, there are several foods that are essential to your fair survival.

2015-08-12 19.34.43Spiral Cut Potato On-a-Stick — It’s so simple, but so fun! It takes all the things we love about a french fry but kicks it up to the next level. Kids and adults alike will love this fair classic!

Deep Fried Macaroni & Cheese On-a-Stick — Kid friendly and delicious! It might be tough to get the kids to share these yummy bites.

Klement’s Famous Racing Sausages Corn Dog – A corn dog is about as classic as fair food comes. Here in Milwaukee, we kick it up a notch by featuring the famous Klement’s Racing Sausages we have come to know and love from every home Brewers game. Don’t leave the fair without this beloved on-a-stick gem!

P.S. Be sure to go on a hunt for the mega dog on-a-stick at Super Dog. It’s 18 inches long!

The Sporkie Finalists

Some of these concoctions are just crazy enough to be awesome. We can’t wait to give these a try!

Water-Street-Brewery-Deep-Fried-Ol-Fashioned-2-225x300 (1)Deep Fried Ol’ Fashioned — This is about as Wisconsin as it gets. What starts with orange pound cake is filled with marachino cheery & brandy cream cheese filling and then the whole thing is battered and (of course) deep fried! And like the signature Wisconsin cocktail, it’s topped with a bitters reduction whipped cream and garnished with orange and a cherry.

Thanksgiving Day Burrito — Take everything you love about Turkey Day and wrap it up in a tortilla. SOLD.

Elvis Chicken and Waffle Sandwich — Dying to hear how this is! This is a homemade peanut butter, banana, bacon waffle that sandwiches a deep-fried, buttermilk-marinated and hand breaded chicken breast. Chicken is topped with Sriracha maple syrup and powdered sugar is sprinkled over the waffle.

Mountain Man Bloody Mary Burger — Speaking of a very Wisconsin menu option, this one takes it to a whole new level. Antelope, Bison, Boar, Elk, and Venison blended into a patty and seasoned like a Bloody Mary. Topped with a Bloody Mary sauce and celery salt, served on a gourmet bun. Garnished with a traditional skewer complete with a cheese curd, all this sandwich is missing is the vodka!

The New Creations

Tavern-at-the-Park-Blue-Moon-Marinated-Pork-Tacos-with-Garlic-French-Fries-300x232Blue Moon Marinated Pork Tacos with Garlic Fries — OMG. These sound amazing. The pork is slow-roasted for 12 hours and served with lettuce, cheese, pico de gallo and spicy ranch. And a side of hand-tossed garlic fries on the side? Yummmmmm.

Chili-Mac Bottom Pizza — Toss a bottle of TUMS in the diaper bag. It’s a deep-fried homemade mac n’ cheese crusted pizza covered with loaded coffee-rubbed Wisconsin beef chili, Wisconsin cheddar cheese, serrano pepper crema, and a sprinkle of fresh chopped red onion.

Crazy Corn Reaper Popcorn — This might not be one to share with the kids because it’s rumored to be the spiciest popcorn in the state! Corn Reaper Popcorn tastes sweet to start thanks to the caramel glaze and sprinkled with the world’s hottest pepper, The Carolina Reaper.

The best way to keep from over-indulging in all the fun fair food is to come to Crazy Grazin’ Day on August 9th where more than 50 food vendors will have smaller portions of their menu options and a reduced price. It’s a fantastic opportunity to sample a lot of great food while not totally busting the belt loops!

Galway Chicken Salad (GF) — All white meat chicken, celery, onions, nuts, and grapes served on top of mixed greens with a side of ranch.

Roasted Corn on the Cob (GF) — Skip the butter bath to cut the fat and you’ve got yourself a fair classic.

Sugar Free Ice Cream (GF) – Guilt-free indulgence at the Got Milk? vendor!

Baked Potato (GF) – Dress it up with all the fixin’s or keep it simple to cut back the calories.

Original Cream Puffs

These are in a category all their own. No food post about the Wisconsin State Fair would be complete without a proper salute to these gems. The Original Cream Puff is unique to Wisconsin and loyal fair-goers look forward to indulging each and every year since they made their debut in 2924. More than 400,000 Cream Puffs were enjoyed in 2015 alone! Bring the whole family to the Original Cream Puff Pavilion and watch through the windows as the talented chefs of The Wisconsin Bakers Association make magic in the Cream Puff Bakery.

In addition to the main location at the Cream Puff Pavilion, you can also find vending locations spread all over the park in case you get a sudden craving and need your fix right quick.

There’s even a Drive-Thru! Place your order at least 24 hours in advance by calling the Cream Puff Hotline at 414.266.7111 and then you can swing by the Cream Puff Drive through inside Gate 6 each morning from 6 to 8 am to pick up your order.

Pro Tip :: Buy a six-pack and have a family Cream Puff eating contest. No hands allowed! It’s delicious and a whole lot of fun!
