In my head, I picture myself curled up in a big bedroom armchair, reading novels for hours while the snow lightly falls outside. All is quiet and no one needs snack refills.
In reality, the big armchair does not exist and I’m happy to read for a solid ten to fifteen minutes before falling asleep, book in-hand. Here are six books I’m excited to read this winter:
- Magnolia Story by Chip and Joanna Gaines with Mark Dagostino.
It’s no secret, City Moms Blog writers love Fixer Upper and all-things JoJo (WWJD, Every Mom Loves Joanna, Reasons to Watch Fixer Upper with Kids) and I’m no exception. My daughter loves watching the show with me and has her own opinions on popcorn ceilings (remove, please!). I’m curious to learn about their marriage and how they turned their dreams into reality.
- When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi
Earlier this year, a friend shared the article Before I Go by the author and, like many, I was moved to tears by his story and fell in love with his writing style. The story chronicles Kalanithi’s journey from promising neurosurgeon to a patient who ultimately looses his battle with lung cancer. Confession, I read this book earlier this fall but want to reread it as his writing and story have left a big mark.
- Scrappy Little Nobody by Anna Kendrick
Confession: I’m a sucker for funny females and after reading this Buzzfeed article, I guess I’m a “fan” of hers.
- In the Company of Women: Inspiration and Advice from over 100 Makers, Artists and Entrepreneurs by Grace Bonney
A new year calls for new inspiration. This is on my purchase wish list!
- The Mothers by Brit Bennett
Basing this recommendation based on all of the online buzz and this opening line: “All good secrets have a taste before you tell them, and if we’d taken a moment to swish this one around our mouths, we might have noticed the sourness of an unripe secret, plucked too soon, stolen and passed around before its season.”
- The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
A classic that I’ve picked up the last two winters would like to finish in 2017!
