August is here! Before we go into Back-to-School mode, there is still plenty of time to enjoy the best summer has to offer! This is your go-to guide for what’s happening in Milwaukee for this month!

The August 2017 Guide is brought to you by the best 11 days of summer……The Wisconsin State Fair!! 

The Wisconsin State Fair is pure heaven for Milwaukee area parents, with everything from rides to animals, food on a stick to live music, crazy gadgets to shopping galore. There truly is something for everyone at the Wisconsin State Fair! We’ve put together a handy Family Guide to the Wisconsin State Fair that gives you everything you need to plan a perfect visit to the fair, but here are just a few highlights you want to make sure to check out this year: 

  • Friday, August 4th – Jelly Belly Day :: Visit Central Park to discover the latest creations from Jelly Belly! You can try five favorite flavors of jelly beans each paired with an emotion, and imprinted with an emoji face. Enjoy them individually or combine them to create your own delicious mix of emotions! 
  • Monday, August 7th – Kohl’s Family Value Day :: Families save big during Kohl’s Family Value Day, Monday, August 7 at Wisconsin State Fair. ALL fairgoers will be eligible for discounted Fair admission from 8 am until 6 pm thanks to a partnership with Kohl’s. Adults will receive $5 admission (a $7 savings) and youth 11 and under will receive FREE admission (a $7 savings).
  • Tuesday, August 8th – Crazy Grazin’ Day :: If your favorite part of the Fair is the FOOD, this is the day you have got to hit up the fair. Sample a variety of Fair foods available at more than 50 food vendors who offer smaller sizes of your favorite items at reduced prices! Plus, the MKE Moms Blog Team will be out and about on the fairground today doing LIVE videos and giving away some fun prizes!
  • Exploratory Park :: No matter which day you visit, be sure to swing by Exploratory Park! This oasis on the south side of the Fair Park features hands-on stations for kids of all ages! Features daily activities to spark your creativity, including wildlife education and button making. Learn about state parks, forests and natural areas from the DNR. Plus, you can still get your DNR state parks and trail passes to keep the exploring going all year long! Have a seat and relax while the kids play on in the NEW Playground area located in the center of Exploratory Park. 
  • Ride the Wonderwheel :: Head over to the west side of the park to give the WonderWheel a whirl. It’s the biggest Ferris Wheel you have ever seen!!

Aug 01 – Aug 22 DanceMKE Competition :: DanceMKE is a returning weekly dance competition featuring Milwaukee dance artists from any discipline. Selected performance groups will dance for cash, trophies and glory over three consecutive weeks August 1, 8 and 15 with the finals on August 22.

Aug 03 – 04 Bargain Book Sale at Cudahy Library :: The Friends of Cudahy Library will be selling books, paperbacks, DVDs, CDs, VHS tapes, and much more at their Bargain Book Sale!  Prices start at just $0.25 — come find your treasures!

Aug 04 – 06 Kids Adventure Games :: Kids ages six to 14 will experience the thrill of adventure racing working in teams of two to navigate an adventure course like no other. Zip lines, mud pits, water obstacles, a giant slip n’ slide and more while building confidence and teamwork.

Aug 05 Dogs Days of Summer at Harley Davidson :: We will feature many local dog rescues and shelters with ADOPTABLE PUPS, each canine will receive a S”WAG” bag upon check in and we will feature dog-friendly acoustic tunes, food vendors, icy cold beverages, doggie wading pool, canine cantina, prizes and more! All pups welcome! You don’t want to miss this cuteness overload!

Aug 05 Washington and Sherman Park Neighbors Ride :: Tour the Washington and Sherman Park neighborhoods on a casual bike ride with the Urban Ecology Center. Check out the link for more details. 

Aug 06 Jazz Visions on the Lake :: Jazz Visions on the Lake is a free, one-day community event that will showcase local jazz musicians at Henry Maier Festival Park. 

Aug 10 Four Course Food Truck Beer Dinner :: Enjoy a 4-course Beer and Italian Street Food Dinner. Includes salad, appetizer, entree and dessert. See the link for all the details. 

Aug. 11 World Elephant Day at the Zoo :: Celebrate the planet’s largest land mammal through interesting and interactive activities!

Aug. 11 – Aug 13 Greendale Village Days :: Greendale will host a three-day Village Days festival event. This celebration weekend will be jam-packed with live music all day every day, delicious food options, drinks, carnival rides, BINGO, the Rummage on the Green, outdoor movie, and the Village Days Parade at Noon on Sunday. Come on down to Greendale for a weekend full of FUN!

Aug 12 Run/Walk for Spina Bifida :: Join us for the 24th annual Sprint for Spina Bifida as we celebrate Chasing Our Dreams in 2017. Money raised will support the mission of Spina Bifida Wisconsin as we serve Wisconsin families affected by this permanently disabling birth defect.

Aug 12 Baseball Game at Old World Wisconsin :: Experience our National Pastime as it existed just after the Civil War.  Watch the Eagle Diamonds Base Ball Club cross bats with an opposing nine then take the field to swing a replica bat or play the field.  Remember, no gloves allowed!

Aug 17 – Aug 20 Milwaukee Irish Fest 2017

Aug 17 – Aug 20 Zoo a la Carte :: “Feast with the Beasts” and enjoy delicious food from local eateries. Animals are on display as popular, national and local live bands perform.

Aug. 18 End of Summer Party with the Washington Park Library :: Soak up the last drops of summer sun with our friends at the Washington Park Library! We’ll have books, crafts, snacks to share, plus a scavenger hunt!

Aug. 19 IndiaFest :: Experience essence of India, through taste of food, dance, musical entertainment in a fun filled all day FREE event for collbaration, culture, history, heritage; beyond borders, religion, region and boundaries.

Aug. 19 Family Fishing Adventure :: Anglers of all ages and skills are invited to guided fishing expeditions around the Milwaukee area. Each month we will visit a different park. Gear and transportation provided. Fishing license required for ages 16 and up. Please register by Thursday, August 17th.

Aug. 19 – Aug. 20 Heirloom Garden Weekend at Old World Wisconsin :: Tours and talks with heirloom garden experts will showcase hundreds of varieties of vegetables, flowers and herbs.  Guests of all ages can immerse their senses as they explore over a dozen gardens, enjoy cooking demonstrations and sample our organically grown heirloom produce.

Aug. 21 UWM Solar Eclipse 2017 :: Maximum visibility of the partial eclipse will be at 1:18 p.m. Events include live music from Sheboygan band The Belle Weather; arts and crafts; opportunities to see the eclipse through telescopes; and more. An alternative plan of viewing a live feed of the eclipse inside the planetarium is available if weather doesn’t cooperate. 

Aug. 23 Free Annual Ice Cream Social :: See the Historical Center building and our exhibit Melodies & Memories: 200 Years of Milwaukee Music, learn about ways to volunteer, and enjoy a free scoop of ice cream while listening to the music of River Rhythms from our patio.

Aug. 25 – Aug. 27 Mexican Fiesta :: Join in on the fun as we celebrate three days of fun, food, Mariachi and Fiesta for everyone. Mexican Fiesta is more than just a celebration; it is a vigorous declaration of community spirit at its best. 

Aug. 26 Lobster Boil :: Feast with us for a good cause! Our festive Lobster Boil is a popular summer event featuring Whole Maine Lobster (or Peel n Eat Shrimp or 1/2 Rotisserie Chicken), corn on the cob, potatoes, and plenty of drawn butter to drizzle over it all.

Aug. 27 Walk for Paws :: Safe Harbor Humane Society’s annual Walk for Paws is back bigger and better than ever. This year we will have more vendors, food, and fun for your whole family (two and four legged).

Aug. 30 The Life of Laura Ingalls Wilder :: Historical presenter Lynn Urban will share some of Laura’s little-known experiences, including those related to artifact replicas that will be on display.

Aug. 30 Stars and S’mores :: Celebrate a summer staple with Stars & S’mores; from 7:00-8:30 p.m., enjoy making s’mores around the fire with friends and family while looking through our telescopes and enjoying a free stargazing show.

May 06 – Sept 04 Body Worlds: Animal Inside Out at the Zoo :: ANIMAL INSIDE OUT takes visitors on an “anatomical safari” inside more than 100 specimens—each one painstakingly preserved through the remarkable process of Plastination, invented by Dr. von Hagens.  From goats to giraffes, to bulls and birds and octopuses to ostriches, the form and function of animals both exotic and familiar are revealed.  Animal biology textbooks come to life in this unforgettable learning experience.

July 01 – Aug. 26 Sunrise Yoga on the Patio :: Start your Saturday with some stretching and sun salutations guided by Brandi Hayes-Fink, from Zen Gen Yoga, on one of the best rooftop patios in the city!

July 05 – Aug. 30 Washington Park Wednesdays :: The Washington Park Bandshell is an unrivaled venue for music in a neighborhood park. Milwaukee County continues to support efforts to promote and beautify this expansive greenspace at the center of several diverse neighborhoods.

July 06 – Sept. 21 Grafton Farmer’s Market 

July 07 – Aug. 18 Tabernacle Neighborhood Theater on the Lawn :: FREE outdoor movie nights! See the link for more details!

June 7 – October 25 Westown Farmers’ Market :: The Westown Farmers’ Market features more than 50 vendors selling Wisconsin-grown produce and flowers, delicious prepared food items, handcrafted art and jewelry, lunch from area restaurants and live music in the park’s gazebo. Spend your Wednesday’s shopping local at the Westown Farmers’ Market!

June 14 – Aug. 30 River Rhythms :: Westown’s free, outdoor summer concert series in Pere Marquette Park is Milwaukee’s destination for music lovers on Wednesday nights from 6:30-9pm.

June 18 – Sept. 24 Custard Capital of the World – Custard Tour :: Milwaukeeans demanded & Milwaukee Food & City Tours delivered with the creation of a tour dedicated solely to highlighting the “custard capital of the world.” On the tour you will visit the shops & stands that have been institutions throughout Milwaukee’s historic communities.
