I’m a bit of a Gilmore Girls fanatic. I can’t begin to count the number of times I have wished I could have breakfast at Luke’s, get into an argument with Taylor Doose, or pick up the pizza on the way to Lorelai’s house for a viewing of Casablanca. But above all, how fantastic would it be to be able to really visit Stars Hollow and wave to Miss Patty on your way to check in at the Dragonfly Inn where Michel would say something snarky as he checked you in, Lorelai would introduce you to the horses, and Sookie would prepare a meal fit for a queen.
If you’ve ever dreamed of stepping into the world of Stars Hollow, you might want to start with a drive out to the village of Wales and a visit to Pedal’rs Inn.
There’s no town troubadour wandering the town square in Wales, but what you will find in this quaint town nestled in the Kettle Moraine region west of Waukesha is a sense of a quiet community that honors history, loves the outdoors, and enjoys keeping things simple and friendly. I felt it the second I set foot in Pedal’rs Inn and I honestly can’t wait to go back! As a member of the Wisconsin Bed & Breakfast Association (WBBA), Pedal’rs Inn is licensed, inspected and insured, and they represent the best of the state’s B&B experience.
The first thing I thought when I pulled up to Pedal’rs Inn was, “It’s yellow!” Though this house is clearly a classic Victorian “painted lady” and The Dragonfly Inn is more of a mid-century modern, the similarities between the two don’t stop at the paint color.
Built in the late 1800s, Pedal’rs Inn features historic details at every turn — a front door that requires precise key-turning trickery, a gorgeous wooden staircase, details around the fireplace and welcoming sitting areas that invite guests to relax and enjoy a good book and a cup of coffee while getting to know someone new. Dee, the innkeeper, greeted me with a genuine smile and led me up the staircase to my bedchamber.
It’s a rare treat to be able to get away for an overnight stay ALONE, but to be able to enjoy some kid-free Mom Time in this beautiful room was a pampering experience indeed. All five bedchambers here have a unique style and personality, but each one features an en suite luxurious bathroom, heavenly pillows, and details in the decor that make you feel transported to another era. My room as well-suited for a solo retreat, but there were others that were larger that would be perfect for a romantic weekend. Even better, book out the whole place for an epic girlfriend’s getaway! Pro Tip – Ask about the attic bedchamber that features loft ceilings, a king bed and sitting area.
Gilmore Girls wouldn’t be the delight it is without Sookie St. James, the talented chef who also happens to be Lorelai’s BFF and business partner. How fun was the episode where she tracks down a reviewer who referred to her Magic Risotto as “fine” and forces his to try it again with the right wine? Well, the food at Pedal’rs Inn is certainly fantastic, it is breakfast only and the wine is cooked into a sauce, glaze or used for poaching pears. On weekends, guests are treated to a four-course breakfast prepared and served by Dee the innkeeper. Yup, FOUR courses.
My Breakfast Experience:
Course 1 – Sorbet course and apple cinnamon scones with coconut butter
Course 2 – Bananas with pomegranate seeds, pistachios and a honey-lime dressing
Course 3 – Pumpkin crepes with orange cream filling topped with orange pecan vodka syrup
Course 4 – Pears poached in merlot and served with homemade whipped cream
I could have died happy after that meal. It was easily one of the best breakfasts I have ever had and it was made abundantly better by the fact that I didn’t have to make it and that it was prepared and served by Dee with such care and hospitality.
Which brings me to the game-changing reason you need to find a reason to make your way out to Pedal’rs Inn. Yes, it’s a gorgeous house, the area is beautiful and the rooms are both comfortable and charming. Yes, the food is top-notch and the price of your stay is surprisingly affordable. But the real reason we Gilmore girls daydream about visiting Stars Hollow is the people, and that’s the same factor that takes this small-town inn to a whole new level. I met a delightful couple over breakfast who told me a couple stories about Dee that made me really understand what made this place so special and what brought them back year after year.
They told me of the time they were having a casual conversation in the parlor one evening and the man mentioned how much he loved ham. The couple woke up at 5:30 am to the sound of the antique doorbell ringing. It was the local butcher, delivering ham for that morning’s breakfast that Dee had called to order the previous evening after learning it was her guest’s favorite.
They also shared the story of how Dee had sent a hand-written letter and gift to the husband of a frequent guest who had just been diagnosed with cancer. Though he had never personally visited the inn and considered himself to be pretty anti-B&B, he figured he should come and thank her in person. After one stay at Pedal’rs Inn, he was hooked…because once you enter this house, you are treated like family.
No post regarding Gilmore Girls would be complete without coffee. It’s what keeps us going, makes it possible for us to do the things. So of, course, I would be remiss not to discuss the caffeination quotient of a visit to Wales and Pedal’rs Inn. My first stop before my arrival at the Inn was at Mama D’s, my absolute favorite coffee shop in Waukesha County. If Luke’s Diner and Weston’s Bakery were to get married and have a baby…..well, you’d get Mama D’s. Brewing up local Milwaukee coffee, creating delicious and unique espresso concoctions, and serving up their famous quiches, cookies, sandwiches, muffins and more, Mama D’s is located right next to the Glacial Drumlin Trail which brings in bikers and hikers, as well as students, study groups and random moms who just need to get away from their kids for a couple hours. The staff gets to know you and you immediately feel comfortable in this sweet space.
Oh, and the coffee service at 7:30 am right outside my bedchamber door at Pedal’rs In was pretty nice too. I had two cups down before even descending the staircase to breakfast!
I would come back here in a heartbeat. My stay was comfortable, enjoyable and the breakfast puts Pedal’rs Inn over-the-top. This is the perfect staycation getaway for anyone in the Milwaukee area — close enough to not be difficult to manage, but far enough to feel like you are able to disconnect from the everyday. Pedal’rs Inn brings a little bit of Stars Hollow to Wales, Wisconsin.
