2018 Guide to Milwaukee Area Farmers Markets

Milwaukee Farmers Markets

Spring. It’s the start of the outdoor farmer’s market season here in the Midwest. And in the metro Milwaukee area, we are blessed with an abundance of beautiful farmers’ markets literally every day of the week.  Shopping at a farmer’s market is a fun experience for the whole family — it is enjoyable to simply browse the stalls, but it’s even better when you buy. When you make a purchase at a farmers market, you’re buying a fresher, more local product and you’re supporting a local producer. All this while promoting a healthy lifestyle.  It can also be a fabulous learning experience for kids of all ages – a time to teach them where their food comes from and what’s in the foods they eat. They can learn about the differences in farming (“what’s organic mean, mom?”). And it also helps them understand the seasons of food (especially handy when they are hankering for watermelon in January). It’s a win-win situation.

Farmers markets are also a wonderful community experience, where you can meet your neighbors, friends, and farmers, and where more of your dollar will stay in the community.  Its a place that brings together farmers, artisans and the community. And while there is no shortage of great markets here in the Milwaukee area, some folks like to make a day trip out of it and explore other markets. So we have a few of those listed as well.  For a full listing, please refer to the Farm Fresh Atlas of SE Wisconsin

To make the most of your farmers’ market trip, I suggest the following tips:

  • Shop around. Walk the market and check out all the produce, comparing the prices and quality before making a purchase.
  • Figure out your strategy: Go early for the best selection. If you’re tight on cash, go later. Many farmers are willing to give bargains in order not to go home with produce.
  • Ask questions. Don’t be afraid to ask for a sample of something if it’s a vegetable you’ve never seen. Or ask the farmer how it is used/what to use it in. Typically, if they grow it, they eat it.
  • Looking for organic? Just ask the farmer. Many farmers grow their produce organically and sustainably, but can’t afford the certification.
  • Carry cash. Not all vendors accept credit cards (although many do), and cash is quicker.
  • Bring your own bags! It’s better for the environment and the vendors.
  • Not all markets are pet-friendly, so make sure to check before you bring Fido along.

Take note: An increasing number of farmers markets across Milwaukee County accept federal nutrition benefits (i.e.: SNAP, WIC + Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program vouchers). The Milwaukee Farmers Market Coalition, facilitated by Fondy Food Center, publishes an annual list of markets that accept benefits.

During the summer in Milwaukee, you really can eat fresh and local 7 days a week!

Up for a field trip? Hop in the car and spend a Saturday at the Dane County Farmers’ Market. Truly the best market in the state – not only is it located on Capitol Square, it’s the largest producer-only farmers market in the country, with over 300 vendors throughout the year. The Saturday summer market runs April 14- Nov 10, from 6:15a-1:45p. It also runs on Wednesdays, April 19-Nov 1, from 8:30am-1:45pm.

What is your favorite farmers’ market to visit?
