A Family Guide to Summerfest

July 1st-2nd East Tosa Grand Prix :: FREE festive family atmosphere surrounding a stage of the USA’s largest competitive road cycling series, the Tour of America’s Dairyland! July 1st-8th Kohl’s Color Wheels at Summerfest :: Kohl’s Color Wheels is the Milwaukee Art Museum’s off-site studio program, traveling to local schools and community festivals throughout the year, providing hands-on art activities inspired by the Museum’s Collection and special exhibitions. Visit the Kohl’s Color Wheels van at Summerfest and take part in a variety of fun-filled, hands-on art projects—for free!

July 2nd or 3rd Rockin’ Roller Coasters :: Ever wondered how a roller coaster works? Explore the history of these thrill machines and learn about the physics behind the fun as you design and build a custom track. Discover what it takes to make the loop-de-loops, twists and turns of a successful roller coaster.

July 2nd or 3rd Carbonation Chemist :: Experiment with extracts to create the perfect flavor for a homemade fizzy drink. Become a carbonation chemist as you introduce bubbles to different foods to make fantastic treats that fizzle and pop.

July 2nd or 3rd Camp Creativity :: Use the tools and materials of the Kohl’s Design It! Lab to explore and create! Nurture your creative side with design challenges and projects to show off at home.

July 2nd or 3rd Lake Monsters :: Explore first hand Lake Michigan’s aquatic invasive species and help solve the problems they pose our freshwater ecosystem. Campers will observe preserved specimens under microscopes and learn about the effect these invaders have on the Great Lakes.

July 2nd or 3rd Made from SCRATCH :: Learn how to program with SCRATCH studio — an online, easy-to-use programming language. Create a custom animation, interactive story, and games!

July 2nd or 3rd Biospheres :: Learn all about freshwater ecosystems and the creatures that inhabit them. Examine plankton, explore food webs, and build your own aquatic biome to take home at the end of the day.

July 2nd or 3rd Circuit Bending :: Circuit bending is the art of purposefully shorting out circuits to reveal hidden sounds and capabilities. Dissect an old toy, explore the circuit, and add buttons and switches to access your hacks.

July 2nd or 3rd Letterpress :: Create a one-of-a-kind print as you learn how to use movable type and a press. Experiment with typography, layout, and design as you use this unique and traditional printing method.

July 3rd July 3rd Fireworks at Betty Brinn :: Visitors can reserve their seats for a night of open play and the exclusive opportunity to watch the US Bank fireworks from the Betty Brinn Children’s Museum’s balconies. Grab some popcorn to view the spectacular display from the best seats on Milwaukee’s lakefront! Reserve tickets online.

July 3rd Annual Fireworks Dinner at Harbor House :: Enjoy dinner before the show and then take in the fireworks from inside the restaurant or outside on our private lakeside patio – a truly unforgettable evening! Space is limited and this event sells out every year, so reserve early! Also featuring live music, cash bar, secured valet parking, and VIP outdoor seating to watch the fireworks.

July 3rd Fireworks Sail Aboard the S/V Denis Sullivan :: Enjoy a 2-hour sail, then stay on-board for your front row seats to an amazing fireworks display! Featuring refreshments from Leinenkugel’s. The Sullivan will sail from 6-8pm and then will return to the dock until the fireworks begin (at approximately 9:30pm).

July 3rd U.S Bank Fireworks Member Event at Discovery World ::  Guests are treated to the best seats in the house at Discovery World! Guests of Members may attend at $10 per person or FREE if your guest purchases a Discovery World membership.

July 3rd – First Tuesdays – Free Entry to Milwaukee County residents to Boerner Botanical Gardens :: First Tuesdays at The Gardens, the free-admission day for Milwaukee County residents, will be offered from May through September, except major holidays. In 2018, the free days are May 1, June 5, July 3, Aug. 7, and Sept. 4. To receive free admission, residents must show ID and proof of residency.

July 4th Glendale Fourth of July Celebration :: All are welcome to celebrate the Fourth of July at this free, family-friendly event!  Join the Glendale tradition and wish America Happy Birthday!  Start the morning off with a Children’s Parade (10:00am) and then a community parade at 10:30am.  Stay at the event for food, activities, games, bingo, live music, bounce houses, and more! End the evening with Fireworks starting at Dusk! 

July 4th West Allis 4th of July Parade, Grandstand Show, & Fireworks :: Join the City of West Allis, West Allis Celebrations Committee, and WAWM Recreation and Community Services Department for this year’s Independence Day celebration.

July 4th Independence Day Celebration at Old World Wisconsin :: Guests of all ages will have a grand ol’ time celebrating an 1876-style Independence Day at Old World Wisconsin. This July 4th family celebration includes a pie eating contest, a parade, live music, and of course the chance to churn and sample ice cream.  The farms will be bustling with preparations, so come ready to lend a hand.  Everyone can enjoy (and even join in!) our Parade of History which kicks off at 4:30 pm.  Make sure to get back to Crossroads Village to grab a front row seat!

July 4th Tosa Tonight Free Summer Concert :: BUILDING A STRONG COMMUNITY THROUGH MUSIC: Join your neighbors for evenings of fantastic music under the stars, featuring local, national, and international talent. Your food and beverage purchases from our local sponsors help raise money for the ongoing non-profit operation of the Rotary Performance Pavilion – home of the Tosa Tonight Summer Concert Series. Music starts at 6:00pm –Concerts are held rain or shine, but may be cancelled due to lightning or severe weather.

July 5th  – Kohl’s Thank You Thursday, Free Admission to the Milwaukee Public Museum :: ALL visitors receive FREE access to the permanent exhibits of MPM on the first Thursday of every month during Kohl’s Thank You Thursday.

July 6th Exoplanets and Ice Cream :: The program will focus on exploring planets outside our solar system and feature topics such as exoplanet discovery, life and survival outside of our planet, and what the future has in store as far as further innovations and ideas. The second portion of the program will include indoor stargazing which will provide an opportunity to identify constellations visible in Milwaukee with and without light pollution. Tickets cost $5 and include a tasty ice cream treat!

July 6th Friday Fishing :: Come catch the big one on the south side! Guided fishing lessons for kids and families are available from our DNR Angler Educator. All equipment is provided! Fishing licenses required for ages 16 and up.

July 7th Science Saturday :: Join us for fire, explosions, astonishing chemical reactions, MORE FIRE, freezing and smashing, and other ridiculously run and pointlessly dangerous experiments! This is our FREE* live science series (held outside on Discovery World’s lawn in the summer months), where we explore the physics of cold and the chemistry of fire in shows that feature demonstrations that you should never try at home!

July 7th Chicago Day at the East Troy Train Railroad Museum & Depot :: Today only we will feature the Chicago, South Shore and South Bend (CSS&SB) railroad, plus other equipment that once ran on Chicago railroads and transit systems. Docents and National Park Rangers from the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore will share the history of the CSS&SB railroad and the interurban cars restored and running on the East Troy Railroad. Just 35 miles southwest of Milwaukee off I-43.

July 7th Outdoor Yoga at The Mayfair Collection :: Elite Sport Clubs is partnering with The Mayfair Collection to host weekly outdoor yoga classes with Yoga master instructor Tom Feest. Tom will teach a one-hour class in the Vinyasa / Power Flow Yoga method live in the plaza at The Mayfair Collection. Classes will begin at 8:30am every Saturday morning. 

July 7thFree Summer Nights Movie :: Gift of Wings is excited to show “Star Wars The Last Jedi” on Saturday night July 7th in Milwaukee’s Veteran’s Park. Bring your blankets and chairs and find a great spot. Gift of Wings will have food, ice cream and drink for sale. Popcorn is only $1.00!

July 10th Kidz Days @ The Mayfair Collection :: The City of Wauwatosa and the Marcus Center for Performing Arts will be hosting KidZ Days in the plaza at The Mayfair Collection in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin! KidZ Days provide free live performing arts programs that promote arts education and encourage interactive participation for local families.

July 10th Skyline Music Series :: Skyline Music is a free community music series presented by COA Youth & Family Centers and sponsored by Allen Silverstein Law Offices, with kids activities sponsored by McDonald’s E. North & Oakland. Get outside this summer for family-friendly food, fun and music in the Riverwest neighborhood!

July 11th Story Time with the Milwaukee Ballet :: Join us for an exciting Story Time featuring the Milwaukee Ballet in partnership with their Ballet Beat program. Ballet Beat engages with the community during the summer and brings professional dancers into libraries, outdoor stages, and community centers throughout the Greater Milwaukee area for interactive activities and performances. Hear professional dancers tell engaging stories and try your hand (or foot!) at some ballet steps and positions.

July 11th  Taste of Muskego :: Held at Veteran’s Memorial Park, Racine Avenue, Muskego, this event features tastes from nine local food businesses. Organized by the Muskego Area Chamber of Commerce to promote local restaurants and food establishments, the event sees 200 to 225 attendees each year. Tickets include tasting samples from vendors, beverage sample (additional beverages for sale), yard games, People’s Vote for Best Taste, and door prizes.

July 11th Concerts at City Center :: Concerts at City Center is a free, outdoor summer music series located in the Library Green at the New Berlin Public Library. Feel free to bring your own food and beverages. Lawn chairs and blankets are advised.

July 11th, 18th, & 25th Live @ the Lakefront :: Milwaukee’s FREE Wednesday evening concert series returns for it’s 11th year with eight shows! Held rain or shine, LIVE @ the Lakefront will feature some of the finest original musical talent in the outdoor Rotary Amphitheater at Discovery World. With the stage overhanging Lake Michigan, you’ll enjoy sunset shows right on Milwaukee’s lakefront, all complemented by Bartolotta’s renowned food and beverage service.

July 12-15th Bastille Days :: Milwaukee’s popular french festival and one of the nation’s largest french-themed celebrations, returns to downtown Milwaukee’s Cathedral Square Park, July 12 – 15. The free four-day bash attracts over 250,000 visitors annually who enjoy live music, an international marketplace, chef and wine demos, French and Cajun cuisine, roaming busker entertainment and a signature 43-foot Eiffel Tower replica offering hourly light shows.

July 13th Kids Fishing Friday :: DNR staff will be on hand with equipment to help your child learn to fish! Park staff will supply poles and bait for up to 20 children as we fish for panfish. Children younger than 16 do not require a fishing license.

July 13th-14th Millers at Milwaukee Vintage Indy Car Event :: See vintage Indy cars from across the country run on the historic Milwaukee Mile.  This is the 24th annual event featuring Miller cars, Kurtis, Duesenberg and roadsters.

July 19th-22nd 8th Annual Hot Air Balloonfest :: Come celebrate our 8th annual Hot Air Balloonfest featuring the 2018 U.S. National Women’s Balloon Competition!  Featuring hot air balloon ascension at dawn and early evenings, as well as “glows” at dusk (all weather permitting!), this is an event not to miss!  Family-friendly, we feature live music, food, beverages, outdoor movie, crafters, Rotocross Drones, helicopter rides, a kids area and more!  Admission is free; parking and select activities do have a fee.

July 20th Bird Hike :: Walk through Lakeshore State Park with one of our Naturalists and learn about the different birds that call Lakeshore home. The park is located in the Lake Michigan Flyway, with over 70 migratory and resident avian species observed annually. Hike with us multiple times to see how the populations change through the seasons!

July 21st-22nd – Milwaukee Air & Water Show :: The sound of thunder will once again take to Milwaukee skies this summer with the return of the U.S. Air Force Air Demonstration Squadron – “The Thunderbirds” – as headliner of the Milwaukee Air & Water Show, held July 21 and 22, 2018 along Milwaukee’s lakefront.

July 22nd Kohl’s Art Generation Family Sundays :: Explore contemporary art and its range of materials and techniques. Add to a group drawing, create a mixed-media sculpture, and experiment with movement and sound, inspired by the work in the exhibition William Kentridge: More Sweetly Play the Dance.

July 28th Brady Street Festival :: Brady Street will be rockin’ the night and day away with 4 stages packed with live entertainment, including some of our fav local bands.

July 28th-29th Art & Chalk Fest :: The Museum of Wisconsin Art (MOWA), located in West Bend, Wisconsin, looks forward to seeing you at its annual Art & Chalk Fest on Saturday, July 28, and Sunday, July 29, 2018. This free outdoor fine arts festival will feature a juried selection of more than 60 Wisconsin artists selling their work and 15 chalk artists from across the nation creating ephemeral masterpieces before your eyes. Art activities for all ages will be offered throughout the weekend along with face painting and a kid’s chalk contest. The festival features live music and entertainment, food vendors, and a craft beer garden. The museum is free and open to the public for the weekend and will feature exhibitions Daniel Gerhartz: The Continuum of Beauty and Joy Ride: Designing Trek.

July 29th Enchanted Evening in the Gardens :: Discover fairies in the flower beds and magic around every corner in this very special free event in the gardens. Children and parents will enjoy whimsical crafts, engaging entertainment, and fun games all evening long. Visitors are welcome to dress as a favorite fairytale character and join the fun!
