A Milwaukee Mom’s Guide to the Month of May 2017

May is such a beautiful time of the year! It’s time to break out the bikes and outside toys to enjoy the great outdoors! We’ve rounded up a list of events happening in the Milwaukee area that is sure to impress even the littlest of children!

May 2 Oak Creek Public Library Family Fun Night – Magazine Scavenger Hunt Come as a family and join our magazine scavenger hunt! Each family will be given magazines to search for words or images from a list of clues. After completing the hunt each family member will receive one small treat. This program is FREE and is geared towards children ages 5-10, but all ages are welcome. 

May 6 Simply the Best Pies Extravaganza To show appreciation for our three generations of fans, we invite all to visit the Elegant Farmer for our Simply the Best Pies Extravaganza.  Our delicious, award-winning pies will be offered for tasting along with delicious food recipes, discounts and a wonderful shopping experience. The apple orchard should also be in full bloom (with Mother Nature’s help) and the garden center will be open.  So make sure to bring your camera for some picture-prefect family photo in the orchard.

May 6 Milwaukee’s Monthly Family Magic Show Come Watch a Rotating Cast of Magicians on the First Saturday of Every Month! Only $5 Per Person – All Ages. 

May 6 Kidney Mile The Parkway 5K Kidney Mile brings  individuals and families together to  raise awareness about the importance of kidney health and the life saving treatments of dialysis and transplantation.Enjoy a Spring morning at Whitnall Park on the scenic, paved route-perfect for casual and avid participants, alike.

May 6-7 Opening Weekend and Girl Scout Days at Old World Wisconsin Our 41st season opens with sheep, seeds and seeing you! Celebrate spring with us as we begin our springtime chores!  Guests can check out the newest additions to our flock and watch as the sheep get their yearly shearing.  See how we transform the wool from the sheep to socks with hands-on experiences for all ages.  Then, help prepare the gardens for the growing season and see what’s cooking in the kitchen after the long winter season. Girls Scouts including adult scouts in uniform or wearing clothing with the Girl Scout emblem are Free.

May 6-7 Art in the Green Our second annual Art in a the Green is a two day indoor art festival held within the beautiful setting of the  Mitchell Park Horticultural Conservatory – “The Domes”.  This fundraiser to benefit the Domes will be staged in our Conservatory Annex with food vendors and entertainment throughout the three Domes.

May 7 Milwaukee Museum Member Swap Day Your Milwaukee museum membership card will get you free reciprocal admission at all of the participating Milwaukee museums listed below! Just show your membership card at the admissions desk at each venue to receive free admission. Please check each venue for hours of operation and visitor information.

May 10-13 Bug in a Rug Children’s Series: Hansel and Goldie Once upon a time…Well, you know the stories of Hansel and Gretel and Goldilocks and the Three Bears but do you know what happened next? Did you know that Hansel and Goldilocks both get lost on the way home? They meet up in the woods and learn that two heads are better than one.

May 12 Greenfield Concert Band Presents Concert In The Park Bring your blanket or lawn chair and enjoy our all-new season finale! Concert in the Park will feature crowd-pleasing music for the whole family at Greenfield’s newest music venue. As always, admission is FREE! Don’t let your ears have all the fun! Treat your tastebuds to a concert cupcake, courtesy of Classy Girl Cupcakes. Beer and soda will also be available for purchase. A percentage of cupcake sales and all bartender tips will benefit the band.

May 12-21 Animal Farm After revolting against the reign of their negligent human master, the animals of Mr. Jones’s farm create their own ideal society in which all animals are equal and rules are set by democratic vote. It’s all working pretty well, until the allure of power leads the animals to a chilling fate. ANIMAL FARM illustrates how new tyranny replaces old and power corrupts even the noblest of causes. For families with young people ages 12 – 17 and up.  

May 13 Walk to End Lupus This walk offers a chance for lupus patients, their families, and friends to come together to raise awareness and funds to fight lupus.

May 13 Spring into Greendale Our annual spring-time event will feature great music, spring crafts,  sidewalk sales, and more! Join us for a fun-filled day the whole family will enjoy.  Spend Mother’s Day weekend exploring, shopping, dining, and participating in all the activities we have planned for you!

May 13 Rediscover Cedarburg As part of the “Downtown Open House Campaign,” the Cedarburg Chamber of Commerce and friends are creating a great, self-guided walking tour of downtown Cedarburg for locals and visitors alike. As you browse the downtown, discover fun facts about some of Cedarburg’s most recognizable buildings, plus you may win one of several exciting prizes.

May 14 Mother’s Day Buffet at Old World Wisconsin Reserve your seats early for our popular Mother’s Day Buffet in the historic 1894 Clausing Barn. After a scrumptious breakfast buffet stroll through the springtime landscape of Old World Wisconsin. All mothers get in FREE, to the site, today!

May 14 Brunch at Blackfinn Ameripub Nothing says Mother’s Day like Brunch! Celebrate Mom Sunday, May 14th from 10am to 3pm with our Brunch Buffet fit for the Queen she is!

May 18 Neighborhood Night at Betty Brinn Join us for FREE admission, courtesy of our sponsors, from 5 – 8 p.m. on the third Thursday of every month! Enjoy access to all of the Museum’s hands-on exhibits, and stop by our Be A Maker space to find tools, materials and techniques for endless ways to experiment and create.

May 20 Bloom | Hosted by MKE Moms Blog Bloom is an event for new and expecting moms that is geared toward moms who are currently expecting a baby, have had a baby within the last year, or are planning on growing their family soon. What makes Bloom unique? We have hand-selected a limited number of sponsors to give you an opportunity to have quality interactions with some of the area’s top specialists and resources. We want you to be encouraged, experience rich learning from local resources, and feel highly valued during your Bloom experience! Swag and giveaways for dayyyyyys! 

May 20 Best Buddies Friendship Walk This fun event will be a celebration of our mission to create friendship, leadership and employment opportunities for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The event is free and open to new participants or teams to sign up. Don’t miss the fun of celebrating inclusion with local mascots, music, games and a free picnic lunch.

May 20 Armed Forces Celebration Day Support our troops by joining us for Armed Forces Day Celebration and the Annual Support the Troops Ride. Gather at Hal’s Harley-Davidson for a free pancake breakfast before riding down to the Harley-Davidson Museum. At the H-D Museum, enjoy Military displays by all branches of the Military, a performance by the American Legion Band, Military gallery talks, and special Armed Forces ceremony. 

May 20 Historic Beer Brewing at Old World Wisconsin Old World Wisconsin and the Museum of Beer and Brewing are partnering and bringing to life 19th-century brews.  See the brewers use equipment and techniques from the late 1800s and heirloom hops and barley grown at Old World Wisconsin. 

May 21 Milwaukee Pug Fest Milwaukee Pug Fest is the largest Pug event in North America.  Owners and their Pugs come from all over North America.  All “Smoochie-faced” breeds are welcome.  Activities include a talent contest, three categories of costume contest, Blessing of the Pugs and friends, demonstrations, pug races. 

May 27 SummerStage 5K Run/3K Walk at Lapham Peak. Join us for our second annual Run/Walk event. All proceeds go toward helping us continuing to improve our venue.

March 24-May 05 Evening in the Land of the Rising Sun Say konnichiwa to our Evening in the Land of the Rising Sun show. Immerse yourself in the breathtaking imagery of Japan through all four seasons as you learn about festivals and Japanese mythology.

May 01-July 22 Little House Big Story by Old World Wisconsin The “Little House Big Story” contest asks people from all over the nation to submit their own story of how Laura Ingalls Wilder inspired them to learn more about Wisconsin, history, or their own family stories. 

May 05-September 30 Sailing on Lake Michigan in Milwaukee Bay Enjoy a Sea Dog Sailing experience in Milwaukee Bay during day sails, sunset cruises, or private excursions on Lake Michigan. Experience the sun, wind, and water beyond Milwaukee’s shoreline.

May 05-November 18 Explore Milwaukee Sightseeing City Tour Hop on and hop off for our fully-narrated, sightseeing tour at one of 11 hotel or attractions in downtown Milwaukee! Hop-on and hop-off at any scheduled stops to visit Milwaukee’s most popular attractions, then pick up the tour where you left off. Ride the bus for as little as 60 minutes, or up to 6 hours, as you explore Milwaukee at your own pace. For individuals and families, this is the best and most economically way to learn about downtown Milwaukee and visit key attractions at the same time. 

May 14-June 25 Open Climb at Urban Ecology Center The warmer weather is back and so is Open Climb! Stop by and enjoy climbing our three-story rock wall. All equipment is provided and trained belayers are on hand to assist.
