Find Your Tribe :: Neighborhood Groups for Milwaukee Area Moms

Finding My TribeI have spent my entire adult life being a mom and even though I have dark circles permanently tattooed under my eyes, my stomach is soft and not meant for wearing crop tops, and my weekends are reserved for Netflix and wine; I have loved every second of it.

The opposite of the traditional twenty-one year old.

I write a lot about “when I got pregnant…” because it was the climax of my life. The turning point. It’s not that I was headed down a deadly path, it’s that I wasn’t on a path at all.

College didn’t scream my name. I wasn’t interested in a specific career path. I didn’t have a team that I was super involved in.

I felt like I was just existing.

I took the pregnancy test in a local coffee shop that one of my friends worked at. I was trying to be cool: order my drink, go to the bathroom to take the test, pick up my drink, and leave.

I looked at the results before getting my drink. My friend texted me later that day asking if I was okay because I was pale and shaky grabbing my drink from the bar.

Totally not calm, cool, and collected.

After the initial rush of emotions wore off, after I told my parents and family, after I wrapped my head around being a pregnant seventeen year old high school senior, I was able to see straight.

I’m going to be a mom. This is my path, motherhood.

The beginning of my motherhood journey was probably the loneliest I have ever been. I was stuck between two generation, neither filling into where I was in life.

When Sarah told me about City Moms Blog Network coming to Milwaukee, I cried happy tears.

(If you haven’t caught on by now, I’m an emotional one.)

The joy stemmed for one reason: we came together because we were moms. Pure and simple.

We are moms, together.

They are my tribe, I found my tribe: Moms.

When MKE Moms Blog began, so did Neighborhood Groups and the role of Mombassadors. Why? Because from Day One, we have been about creating community for the moms of the Milwaukee area, both online and offline. These groups create a simple, tangible way for women to get to know one another and to actually hang out, put on real pants (maybe) and make new friends.

Neighborhood Groups are localized groups around the Milwaukee and the surrounding cities focused on the building relationships between families.

Mombassadors are the moms who volunteer their time facilitating the Neighborhood Groups, planning playdates, Moms Night Out events, and other adventures catered to moms and their kids.

As Community Life Manager, I started out by being the Mombassador to our five original groups, until recently, when we hosted small event at Colectivo with area moms to share more information about Mombassadorship.

Mombassadors came flooding in, hallelujah! And I swear…I could hear angels singing.

With more Mombassadors joining the Neighborhood Group team, the groups are beginning to have more members and a community, both online and offline, is being built.

It is truly a beautiful thing to watch grow.
