Brewers Organics: Organic Produce Delivered to You {SPONSORED}

TRUE CONFESSIONS: Buying organic produce is not exactly high on my priority list. As in, it probably ranks slightly above cleaning my baseboards (like, ever), but definitely below cutting my boys’ toenails. It doesn’t happen very often. Sure, I try to look for sales at the grocery store if possible, but my shopping trips have become more like an undercover mission than anything else. Get in, get out. As quick as possible and preferably with nobody knowing you were even there. It doesn’t leave much time to really look closely at the fresh produce I’m buying.

But really, I should be caring more about where my food is coming from and how it has been grown. The more information becomes available to the regular consumer about what goes into the food that we in turn put into our bodies, the more I am convinced that is is something we, as parents, need to start being more mindful about. I’m the first to admit that I turn to the frozen chicken nuggets faster than I should. But when Brewers Organics gave me the opportunity to try out one of their boxes of fresh organic produce delivered right to my door, I figured my whole “convenience” excuse was tossed right out the window. Plus, the dollars I would be spending are staying right here in my Milwaukee area community!

Worth a try, right?

A few things to know about Brewers Organics:

  • They are a small, locally owned business and member of Local First Milwaukee
  • There are no commitments – add weeks, skip weeks, no fee to sign up or cancel
  • No delivery fees
  • A huge delivery area with the capability to deliver to offices, homes, etc. They even left the delivery at my house while I was at work so I didn’t have to wait for them!
  • All the produce is completely customizable. You get to swap around all your produce so you only get things that you like.
  • They have an online shop that is full of products from locally owned businesses with items like meat, cheese, eggs, nuts, etc.
  • The service is year-round and offers as many local produce options as possible. During harvest season, nearly all the vegetables shipped out are hand-selected from local farms!
  • Brewers Organics proudly supports Hope House of Milwaukee by picking up and dropping off donations each week. Customers can leave out items for collection and Brewers Organics staff then delivers them directly to Hope House. They also donate all their extra product to the homeless shelter and local schools to use.

Now, I’m no gourmet chef, but this sounded like a company I could get behind. Amanda from Brewers Organics was wonderful to work with and answered all of my questions promptly. Here’s how the sign-up process works.

  1. Head to the Brewers Organics website to create your account with their easy sign-up process. (Don’t forget to enter the promo code for your exclusive discount! **see below**)
  2. Schedule your first delivery and select the items your family loves — and the ones they want nothing to do with! I got to let them know that we are a NO MUSHROOM household. Allergies? This is a great way to customize your box to make sure that no offending item enters your home. I also got to specify that decaf coffee is a a waste of time in my book. 🙂
  3. The week of your delivery, you have until 8 am on Monday morning to make substitutions in your box. We originally had beets and fennel in our box and I considered keeping them to really challenge myself to cook with items I’ve never used before, but I eventually changed my ind and subbed them out for some kale and red bell pepper, items I knew my family would love!

Then, all I had to do was leave a cooler out on my porch on delivery day and my beautiful box of produce was delivered while I was at work. I came home and started to figure out what I wanted to cook with this beautiful assortment of organic fruits and vegetables!

DSC_0383AWe had a large salmon filet in the freezer, so we thawed that out and broiled that in the oven with some seasoning and lemon juice. Out of my Brewers Organics box, I chopped up half of the butternuts squash to roast alongside one of the Roma tomatoes they sent — all tossed in some olive oil with kosher salt and cracked black pepper. My husband chopped up the potatoes and seasoned those while I peeled the rainbow carrots and prepared them according to the recipe below:

Honey Roasted Rainbow Carrots

  • approx 1 lb Rainbox Carrots, peeled and sliced
  • 1 Tblspn honey, melted
  • 2 teaspoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • a few grinds of fresh black pepper

Toss carrots in a bowl with olive oil and spices. Bake on a baking sheet at 425° for 25-30 minutes or until tender.

I don’t think I have ever served my family a meal that was 100% organic before, unless you count that time that my kids ate so many sugar snap peas from my mom’s garden that they were too full to actually eat a meal afterwards.

Overall, I was very impressed with the assortment of produce that was included in my box, but I definitely think my favorite feature was the ability to swap items out prior to delivery, ensuring that nothing in my box would go to waste. The whole process was very smooth and convenient!

We are so lucky to have a service like this available to us right here in Milwaukee! As Brewers Organics continues to grow, so will their product options and what’s not to love about supporting a local business who is committed to providing convenient, healthy food options for families?

My favorite out of the box were the pears. Outstanding. Sweet, perfectly ripened. Pears aren’t normally something we grab at the supermarket. These were really good.
